In the PJM region, which encompasses 13 states, energy costs/power supply costs jumped from 2.2 billion to 14.7 billion dollars a year. This may have to do with higher oil prices, increasing population, or increasing demand. However, it is most likely caused by rising energy costs due to AI and data centers. This is a massive energy cost increase that is devastating. Additionally, it is impacting people in the PJM region and is causing increasing energy costs. According to the research, 2/3 of it was caused by data centers. The data center sales tax exemption costs 1.6 billion dollars a year. Home prices on average go up 2-5% around data centers. On average, they create 100-200 jobs. Workers' wages don’t increase over time. The data center industry will be worth “10’s of billions of dollars a year by 2030. Some have over 100 MW of power. Some AI-based data centers use up to 2 million homes worth of energy. Data centers are worth 1-1.5% of global energy use. In advanced economies, it is worth 2-4% of all energy use. In 2024, the global data center market reached 100 billion dollars.
