Housing Assistance for Mental Health Patients (For the Homeless Population)

Problem:

Patients with mental health issues sometimes become homeless. This is a portion but not all of the homeless population. Patients with mental health issues may sometimes be so sick that they are forcibly hospitalized, voluntarily hospitalized or become sick. Patients with mental health issues face a varying number of issues.

This is a housing analysis on how to help limit the mental health homeless population.

Housing Prices:

 The existing median housing price is $434,100 on median. The average price fell 1.7% in 2026. The highest median price was $442,800 this June. (Miller, 2026) This being so high means that I desperately recommend building more houses. The median rent in the United States is $1854(Average Rent, 2026).  A two-bedroom apartment on average is $2,004. This means splitting a two-bedroom apartment on median costs $1,002.  This is not impossible for someone to pay; however it is still expensive.

How to Tackle the Mental Health Homeless Crises

According to a research paper (Stergiopoulos et al., 2015) helping the severely ill mental health homeless population requires multiple treatments.  According to research, while homelessness can be a financial issue for those with mental health issues who are homeless it is not just a financial issue. However, the suggested targeted attack for housing homeless people with mental health issues includes rental subsidies, they are additional measures recommended.  They recommend high risk patients/ (high need of support patients and offsite mobile services. The mental health high risk patients paid 30% of their income in housing and the rest was covered in housing subsidies. This treatment idea increased Stable housing in these patients by 33%-49.5% in different Canadian cities. This plan may also work in the United States which is what I am suggesting.
