The Panama Canal - the beginning

Updated: Apr 27

Tiger - an animal that is Common in the area surrounding the Panama Canal.

I wanted to read about the Panama Canal because it’s my aunt’s dream to take a cruise on the Panama Canal before she dies, and she bought me a book for my 25th Birthday written about it. The Panama Canal is one of the most amazing and important pieces of construction ever built. The Panama Canal was built in the early to mid-1500’s, however there was some controversy’s related to the Panama Canal opening it up to enemies or other workers.

The Panama Canal was a long-standing Idea from American politicians and was finally decided to be a big priority including rival threats and was commissioned by Andrew Jackson. The South American Liberator and general – Simon Bolivar wanted the Panama Canal to be constructed due to the economic opportunities it would bring to South American and Central America. The actual building of the Panama Canal started with Andrew Jackson due to rival monopolies.

The Panama Canal started to be considered an option by America, and maybe a necessity in the late 18th century by multiple French ambassadors to help grow America on the World Stage. The American involvement in a potential Panama Canal started in 1781 with Benjamin Franklin who was the representative in Paris, France for the United States. He wanted the United States to build the trans Isthmus-canal. In 1781 he printed on his pamphlet written by a French Peasant- who advocated for the cutting of canals at Panama and the Suez Isthmus. Later, Thomas Jefferson, also wanted to create the Panama Canal and tried to encourage the French to Join them in this search. Thomas Jefferson thought that the United States- the new nation- should expand southward as the West and East were mostly already fairly dominated by the European. South and Central America had just been liberated from colonial rule and the British were quick to defend the newly created nations.

Simon Bolivar- the South American - Liberating leader – worked to help started the idea, plans and location of the Canal. The South of the United States was defended by Britain after the liberation of Central and South America from the colonizers. The 1820’s finished and opened the Erie Canal in Europe and the United States as well as the Hudson River and the Great Lakes. The North Sea, in the Atlantic, and across Scotland 28 locks across Europe the ongoing vessels many more canals in American and across Europe were made from 1800-1830 it was an extremely busy time for construction!  The Person in charge of the Panama Canal was Simon Bolivar- the great South American leader, statemen, general and revolutionary. He chose Panama City as the site for his Latin American Congress which met on July 22, 1826.The actual Construction of the Panama Canal was a mostly worldwide effort with Britain being a decent portion of it.

The Construction of the Panama Canal came from Britain and was deemed necessary by America – by the current president- Andrew Jackson – due to the Dutch Monopoly in Central America. The Construction of the Panama Canal was led by a worldwide search of Engineers, funders, explorers, geographers and designers and the labor was supplied by British convicted Criminals. The Panamanians were extremely – extremely poor and had a long economic decline that started in the mid-18th century. What caused the construction and need for the Panama Canal was the Dutch Monopoly in central America which caused Andrew Jackson to create an emergency situation that included the start and designing of the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was the biggest canal that was constructed in the time of the highest proportion of canal construction in the early-mid 19th century.

The Panama Canal was an idea first came from Benjamin Franklin and was finally executed by Andrew Jackson due to a rival monopoly in the American greater continent that was threating the United States’s economics and military capabilities and success. The timespan from the Idea of the Panama Canal to the first Construction of it was 50-60 years of planning lobbying and research. The Labor for the Panama Canal came from British prisoners and the brainpower came from most of the world attracted by very high wages. The nearby inhabitants of Panama were some of the poorest people on the American Continent so they definitely supported this opportunity for economic investment and work.
