Roman Battle Roman Princeps

Updated: May 8

This piece of writing was based on the Roman Republic which was recommended by a friend for something to draw and write about. This post is an analysis of the Punic War, - Rome vs. Carthage, and how the generals fought the battles. The Second Punic War was a make-or-break moment for the Roman Republic, which was a very difficult time for Rome[JS1] . The Carthaginian General Hannibal outmaneuvered the Roman Army- even with less men and left the Republic with a major defeat.

The Roman Princeps:

The Roman Legionary had a division called the Princeps. The Principes was around 30 years old, and they were the veterans of the Roman Army. They came back from the Roman military disaster versus Hannibal which happened during the dying days of the first year of the Second Punic War. The Legionary was Elusive, and strong versus the navally strong Carthaginians. The Roman legionary used the Pilum pike to thrust a killing blow.

Other Weapons that were used against the Carthaginians included dress and equipment with the right hand which also was used by Greece and the Castel ruff. There Helmets were a very special and useful invention greatly helping the Romans in battle. Their uniform included a feather crest that was bought by wealthier citizens. The Lorica hamate’s shoulder pad added protection and used color which was consistent with the soldier’s uniform.

The soldiers uniform also consisted of a leather belt which reduced the burden, greaves and solid feet wear which gave them an advantage. It also included a coin purse. The footwear was adopted by the Roman Army and had a battle coin purse on his belt.

The Roman Republic included a soldier’s uniform, sword, pike, dagger, coin purse and shoes. The Roman soldier was the most effective fighting unit of its time and was highly trained and equipped. The Roman Soldier was even better trained and equipped after Hannibal’s major victories to make sure it never happened again.
