Educational Crisis Across the U.S

Date

September 2025

Declining Math and Reading scores across the United States:
Reading and Math scores in the United States for high school seniors are at an all-time low, according to the Washington Wall Street Journal, “Twelfth graders’ average math score was the worst since the current test began in 2005, and reading was below any point since that assessment started in 1992 “(Barnum 2025.)” This is a disaster, as education is critical for our workforce, college and skilled labor. This means that graduating highschooler’s are less prepared for college and the workforce. However, this could be partially due to the higher number of highschooler students graduating, this is positive. However, the decline started even before the pandemic- which is very troubling and goes against our typical ideas.
There are a few solutions, putting more money into underperforming schools and revamping the education system. Also, we should offer more tutoring to our students. This will allow them to catch up. We should also increase teachers’ salaries to allow them to teach their students better and to attract better teachers. We should also put more research/science funding into education- this will allow teachers and education leaders to develop better solutions and teaching strategies to help our students. The gap between the best and worst students has increased, suggesting that we should increase support and tutoring. Apparently behavior has also been bad and theirs also high teacher turnover- this suggests easy solutions.
